The best colour to paint your fence is one that makes your garden seem larger. Garden improvements don't always have to be on a big scale. Sometimes a simple change like painting a fence can make a big difference.  It can be hard to know which colour to paint your fence which is why most of us for classic brown, however there are some colours that can make a garden appear larger than it actually is.

1. Black or dark graphite

A fence painted in a dark colour can makes a garden of average size appear larger because it shifts the eyes from the fence to the greenery.

You can use a black or dark graphite fencing if you have lots of plants in your garden. It will give your plants depth and will act as a foil for their colours.

If there is a lot of green in your border, paint your fence with dark olive or French Navy to tone in with your plants.

2. Pastels

Pastel colours are great for small courtyards because they can make the space feel brighter and more open. If you have a small backyard garden, choose colours like cream, soft, light blue, olive, or dusty pink.

Your plants' colour palette will determine the colour you choose, so try and match them if you can.

Painting a small courtyard with dark colours could make it appear oppressive, so try to avoid this.

Dark olive or graphite would give the illusion of depth and make tropical looking flowers really stand out.

3. Outdoor mirrors are a good idea

To make a garden appear larger, an outdoor mirror could be placed at the end of the garden.  Place climbers around the mirror so it blends in with the rest of the garden.

Avoid putting a mirror in direct sun, especially during summer heat.

It is important to use quality products when painting your garden fence. This ensures that the paint will last for many years and will also look good.

If you are doing it yourself, remember to wear old clothes and eye protection and protect any landscaped or grass areas by placing a plastic tarp on top.

Prepare the fence by sanding it down, if it is wood, or using an orbital sander/sanding block for metal.

Once your fence has dried, you can use your roller to paint it. Slow and steady movements are needed to ensure that the entire area is coated. Using a roller to paint your fence is quick and easy, however there will be gaps that you need to fill in at the end with a soft brush. This is especially true for intricate shapes or interlocking designs.
